The 7 P's of marketing

"I don't know anything about marketing."

This is not a surprising statement from a therapist. What's surprising is the occasional sheepishness with which it's being said, because...

Marketing is a separate discipline that requires learning and often a diploma or certificate of some sort. So why should therapists be expected to know it?

I for one, know nothing about coding and I'm not embarrassed to admit it!

But... I do think that using marketing to grow your business and attract clients who are a good fit for your practice is important. That's why I'm going to break down the classical 7 P's of marketing, and highlight an important (and often neglected) "D" element in this framework.

The 7p's are useful because they encompass your entire strategy for attracting clients. Here they are:

  • Product: your therapy service or a specific offer (course, worksop, etc.)
  • Price: your fees, profit margins, and payment methods.
  • Place: Distribution channels, where people come into contact with your practice.
  • Promotion: ways to connect with potential clients.
  • People: that's you and other people who're involved in growing your practice.
  • Process: this is your internal system of attracting, onboarding and managing clients.
  • Physical evidence: a confirmation of purchasing your service.

I highlighted "Distribution" because we often overlook planning it. We rely on specific methods (SEO, Social, ads) without considering what would make the most sense for our ideal clients.

Defining distribution can help us pinpoint the locations where we can have access to a large pool of our potential clients. Maybe it's a local coffee shop, an organization, a referral partner, or even a podcast. Whatever makes sense to YOUR clients' lives.

Often, distribution involves contacting other people and building relationships. Not everyone's favorite cup of tea. But if planned well, it can bring you beautiful results.

And speaking of distribution, I just posted my thoughts on growing your private practice with ads on LinkedIn. If you're curious, take a look here and join the discussion β†—

The Biden-Harris administration launched an initiative for the first-ever Licensure Portability Grant Program investment in a multi-state social worker licensure compact.

INDUSTRY NEWS

Therapists are Switching to Coaching

Deterred by lengthy education and burnout, many Masters-level mental health providers are turning to coaching.

The online platform Headspace employs and provides additional training for mental health and wellness coaches. This also allows the providers to see "lower-need" clients.

The recent BHB article breaks down the pros and cons of becoming a coach and being employed by the platform.

FINAL THOUGHTS

You may have noticed that the format of this newsletter has changed. I've updated the News curated section because I noticed less interest in industry news overall.

If you like the new format or have thoughts on improving the newsletter, please drop me a line, I'd love to know.

See you next week!
