NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

How we used the Summer Slump

The hardest things in starting and growing an online community is keeping people engaged.

One of the mistakes I initially made with the REdD Academy Network was giving too much too soon. I hopped on weekly live trainings and tried to create engagement by posting questions and resources.

But I learned that this approach doesn't work for therapists and is costing me members. So instead, I decided to slow things down. I changed my strategy from "choose your own adventure" to "follow me!"

Monthly Focus

I came up with a new system that blends a curriculum of an online course with the camaraderie of a community. Every month I focus on a single "mission", a marketing focus that is easy to follow and implement.

For example, in June our mission was to do outreach to generate referrals. The Network members had a clear plan, templates and a guide to systematically reach out to medical providers, peers, and personal networks. And the results were overwhelmingly positive.

Here's what one member wrote:

In July we focused on building and strengthening an online presence, and in August we've put together our content strategy.

What's Next

This week we've kicked off our 4th mission, SEO. It's a big topic and not every member has caught on to it yet. But that's ok, because the tutorials, the live session recordings, the guides and the checklists are there to guide them along.

And now, after I've seen the success of slowing down the pace, I've decided to open the doors for new members again in October.
