NOTES FROM THE EDITOR

Asking for a bit more

I was planning to talk about AI website builders today.

But then, I looked through this week's notes from my conversations with therapists, and chose to leave the AI talk for next week.

Instead, I want to focus on an underrated marketing skill that nobody talks about, although good marketers use it daily.

I'm talking about the art of asking.

This skill can build relationships, gain and retain clients, and build your reputation. But often, shame or fear of rejection holds us back.

I've been there, and I'm here to show you how you can start asking for what you need today, ethically and effectively.

When clients work with me, we often put together email and phone scripts of sending out various requests for collaboration and promotion. Here are a few ways you too can incorporate it into marketing your practice:

  • Asking your referral sources, colleagues, and peers to leave you a review on your Google Business Profile. It will help you stand out in local searches and build trust.
  • Asking your network to spread the word about your events, Lead Magnets, and articles.
  • Asking to be a guest on a podcast. Here's an article about the best podcasts for pitching yourself as a guest.
  • Asking your social media audience to follow you or subscribe to your account or channel.
  • Asking your referral partners to promote your practice to their email subscribers.
  • And finally, simply asking for an introduction to someone who could be of help to you.

Despite the "common sense" nature of these tips, they are not always easy to follow. The good news? You don't need to implement them all at once.

Pick one, try it out, and let me know how it works for you.

Next week, I promise to write about that AI website builder.
(It's very 😎)

And now to the news!

NOTEWORTHY

Mental Health Warnings on Social Media

A new bill may be be passed in CA that aims to protect children's mental health online.

The bipartisan bill proposes adding Warning Labels on social media sites that would pop up weekly.

BUSINESS AND PRIVATE PRACTICE

A Two Chairs Review

Brittany Vargas, the Everyday Health writer, described her experience being matched with and seeing a therapist through Two Chairs.

The review focused on the matching process, intake, pricing, and therapy sessions. Despite the overall positive experience, here's how the writer summed it up:

"Still, I wouldn’t continue with Two Chairs if I weren’t writing this review. I like to be more involved in finding a therapist, and I wasn’t a big fan of the cancellation and rescheduling policy.”

INDUSTRY NEWS

What Patients Want

A recent research from Headway found that only 17% of people who search for mental health providers through insurance directories actually find one that way.

The research also found that patients prefer to find therapists through their Primary Care Providers and Insurance Companies.

FINAL THOUGHTS

As someone who speaks five languages, I’m fascinated that English is the only one where the same verb is used for both a question and a request.

Linguistic musings aside, this subtle overlap makes it less intimidating to approach people.

If you're anxious about asking for a favor, try reframing it as "simply asking a question".

See you next week!
