Mostly, he wanted to write a book as an aid to the course he taught in Harlem. The main points in Carnegie's book are based on courtesy and common sense yet it became an international bestseller and sold over 30 million copies. One of the main principles of this book is a good reminder for building genuine connections through networking: Talk In Terms Of The Other Person's Interests. Often, we think of networking as a numbers game in which we serve our interests to generate business. For therapists, it may look like going to events or grabbing coffee with a colleague. A better approach would be to look at the value you could offer to another provider and ask yourself: "Why would someone want to refer to me?" and "Who could benefit from referring to me the most?"
